1. What are your hopes for the service-learning project?
My hope is that I will gain a better understanding of those who are needy to the extreme. I want people to tell me their stories, then I can let them be heard by numerous people. I think it will be interesting going a couple weeks in a row and maybe forming some surface level friendship, or more.
2. What are your assumptions about your service learning site?
Currently I am not 100% sure where I want to go. I have been to Kings Harvest before in Davenport, and honestly it is a little bit scary there but I had a great time once I got comfortable. I am going to look into other options; I am not sure if I want to go to a different place or not. No matter where I go I will try to go with an open mind.
3. What do you already know/or assume about the work they do?
I know that it is hard work. Sometimes it can be dirty and very taxing, however, the rewards are usually worth it. Doing 12 hours will defiantly be a task as I have never worked for shelters or things of that sort on a constant basis.
4. What do you know/or assume about the population they serve?
I know that for the majority they all need it. The vast majority of them may not have been able to get higher education because they didn't know of alternatives to the same cycle their families have been stuck in. Most live day to day if they are 100% homeless and may not know when their next meal will be. However, I think it would be cool to inform these people of the options and opportunities they could possibly take advantage of.
5. What connections/interests/passions do you have for this site or the population it serves?
I am a secondary speech/theatre education degree, one of the main components of theatre is portraying the human condition. I think with this knowledge I have gained from my background in theatre I can relate to many of these people. Also I never had anything given to me, and sometimes you have to fight for what you want in life, and so far I have done that. All people can get along, of course there is things we won't agree on, but if you talk to someone you may find that you have far more in common than you knew.
My Inspirational Quote of the Post:
Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
